INTELLIGENZA VEGETALE: L’INTELLIGENZA DELLE PIANTE
Le piante sono intelligenti? Come possiamo affermare che le piante hanno un’intelligenza? E se ce l’hanno, dov’è, visto che non hanno il cervello? Non hanno davvero il cervello? Cosa può essere il cervello delle piante?
Sono domande simili a quelle che si sono poste Stefano Mancuso, scienziato di prestigio mondiale e Alessandra Viola, giornalista e divulgatrice scientifica nel libro: “Verde brillante. Sensibilità e intelligenza del mondo vegetale” Giunti Editore S.P.A. 2015. Vediamo i punti più salienti della loro trattazione sull’argomento dell’intelligenza delle piante.
Le piante: la specie più diffusa
Per cercare di rispondere a queste domande hanno iniziato la loro riflessione partendo dal concetto di specie dominante, che in biologia è la specie che ottiene più spazio vitale rispetto ad altre. Questo sta a dimostrare una migliore adattabilità all’ambiente circostante e una più alta capacità di risolvere i problemi che ci sono per la lotta alla sopravvivenza. Quindi il presupposto del discorso è che: più una specie è diffusa, più peso specifico ha all’interno dell’ecosistema.
Spesso sentiamo dire che la Terra è dominata dall’uomo ma ne siamo proprio sicuri? Considerando che sulla Terra il 99,7 % della biomassa (massa totale di tutto ciò che è vivo) è rappresentato da vegetali, emerge sicuramente che sulla Terra regnano senza ombra di dubbio le piante!
Ma da dove deriva questa convinzione assai diffusa secondo cui è l’uomo ad essere la specie dominante? Che controlla su tutto e avanza diritti sulle altre specie?
Se i dati parlano chiaro, le piante sono organismi più raffinati, intelligenti e adattabili più di quanto siamo abituati a pensare…
Cos’è “l’intelligenza vegetale”?
A livello storico ci sono molti pregiudizi sul modo di riferirsi alle piante…
Si consideri il fatto che molte piante vivono ancorate al suolo, sono esseri stanziali; per sopravvivere quindi e per far fronte agli attacchi esterni, hanno strutturato il loro corpo modularmente. Ecco così che non sono presenti organi singoli (es. cervello, cuore, polmoni, stomaco), altrimenti una loro lesione inficerebbe sulla sopravvivenza dell’intero organismo. La loro struttura è fatta da moduli ripetuti interagenti tra loro e in grado di sopravvivere in modo autonomo. Da qui deriva l’idea che le piante sono una colonia, invece che un individuo.
Essendo fatte in modo differente da noi le piante ci sembrano distanti e quindi meno comprensibili.
Abbiamo capito che, anche se non hanno singoli organi che svolgono le funzioni, tutte le funzioni possono ugualmente essere svolte. Ed ora veniamo al punto dell’intelligenza… qualcuno si potrebbe chiedere: ma se non hanno un cervello sono intelligenti lo stesso? E la risposta è: si!
Se partiamo dal presupposto che l’intelligenza, che è una proprietà della vita, sia l’abilità di risolvere i problemi, allora possiamo attribuirla anche alle piante, non solo all’uomo e agli animali. Le piante la usano per difendersi dai predatori usando strategie complesse. Un esempio? Per l’impollinazione si fanno aiutare da “trasportatori” affidabili, aggirano ostacoli, si ricambiano aiuti, cacciano animali o li seducono, si muovono per il cibo, l’acqua, la luce e l’ossigeno. Che le piante avessero capacità evolute se n’era accorto anche Charles Darwin e ha riportato le sue riflessioni ne: “The Power of Movement in Plants”. Allora, i tempi nei quali ha vissuto Darwin non erano maturi per ottenere valorizzare sulle sue riflessioni; ora, invece, abbiamo tutti i motivi per poter garantire un rispettoso riconoscimento alle piante.
Un esempio di intelligenza: le radici delle piante
In ogni singola cellula delle piante ci sono le funzioni cerebrali che non sono separate da quelle corporee. Come si è visto sopra, le piante sono strutturate modularmente, senza che vengano concentrate le funzioni in organi singoli ma distribuite invece nell’intero essere vivente. Questa strategia permette loro di perdere parti anche considerevoli del proprio organismo senza rischiarne la sopravvivenza.
Nella radice già Darwin ne riconosceva una capacità decisionale e di guida. Nella sua punta (o apice radicale) è insita la funzione complessa di guida; dalla crescita sotto terra e dall’esplorazione del suolo alla ricerca di acqua, ossigeno e sostanze nutritive. Ci sono molte mansioni a cui deve provvedere la radice e deve anche mediare tra esigenze diverse, oltre al fatto che nella guida dell’esplorazione del suolo sono richieste importanti valutazioni (es. svilupparsi verso il basso per cercare acqua o verso l’alto dov’è più facile che si trovi buona aria da respirare?).
Com’è fatta una radice? Cos’è l’apice radicale?
Nella punta estrema della radice si trova l’apice (radicale appunto) le cui dimensioni variano da specie a specie. La parte della radice che si allunga (la parte viva della radice) è in genere di colore bianco ed è quella parte che ha le maggiori capacità di senso, oltre al fatto che svolge un’attività elettrica molto intensa basata su potenziali d’azione, cioè segnali elettrici simili a quelli usati dai neuroni nei cervelli animali. E ogni vegetale ha diversi milioni di apici; l’apparato radicale di una pianta, anche piccola, può contarne oltre quindici milioni! Incredibile! Quindi ogni apice percepisce sempre moltissimi parametri che sono tutt’ora in corso di aggiornamento: gravità, temperatura, umidità, campo elettrico, luce, pressione, vibrazioni sonore, presenza o assenza di ossigeno, anidride carbonica, gradienti chimici, presenza di sostanze tossiche (veleni, metalli pesanti). Questi apici sono come dei “centri di elaborazione di dati”!
Come funzionano gli apici radicali? Come funzionano le radici insieme?
I singoli apici radicali, essendo parte della stessa pianta, non sono indipendenti l’uno all’altro ma sono come dei nodi di una rete e funzionano collettivamente, proprio similmente alla rete Internet. Lavorano assieme per la sopravvivenza della pianta. Sul come lavorino assieme, ci sono attualmente varie ipotesi. Le radici sono collegate tra loro anatomicamente, essendo l’apparato radicale una rete fisica, eppure molto probabilmente i segnali che permettono alle radici di comunicare tra loro non viaggiano all’interno della pianta. Sappiamo che le piante sono abili nel produrre molecole chimiche quindi non ci stupiremmo se anche le parti aeree emettessero segnali chimici per comunicare tra di loro.
Un’altra ipotesi è che gli apici radicali siano sensibili ai campi elettromagnetici, tra i quali quelli causati dalle radici vicine e comportarsi di conseguenza o ancora percepire i suoni prodotti dalle altre radici che crescono.
Una delle teorie comunque più accreditate è che le radici possano comportarsi come uno sciame che agisce secondo una forma di intelligenza distribuita posseduta appunto dagli sciami e da altre specie di animali (compreso lo stesso uomo) e mettono in atto comportamenti “emergenti” che i singoli organismi non hanno. Quindi, anche se non c’è un cervello che dirige l’operato di ogni singolo apice, ogni apice manterrebbe una distanza stabilita dagli altri che crescono attorno a lui e di conseguenza ci sarebbe una crescita coordinata e anche la migliore esplorazione possibile del suolo. Nel mondo vegetale ogni pianta è come se fosse da sola uno sciame perché questi processi entrano in funzione anche all’interno di una sola pianta. Non è incredibile?!
Proprio per queste loro importanti caratteristiche, le piante possono rappresentare un modello importante per studiare e approfondire il grande campo dell’intelligenza.
